About Us
The Butte County Fire Safe Council (BCFSC) is a grassroots 501c(3)nonprofit dedicated to building wildfire-resilient communities across Butte County. Since 1998, we’ve partnered with residents, agencies, and local organizations to reduce hazardous fuels, improve forest health, and strengthen wildfire resilience through education, collaboration, and action.
Our mission is to provide safety in Butte County through wildfire hazard education, mitigation, and wildfire recovery. From the foothills to the forests, our work spans defensible space projects, shaded fuel breaks, prescribed fire, post-fire restoration, youth education, and community engagement.
As we grow to meet the evolving needs of our region, we’re looking for a dedicated team member who shares our commitment to stewardship, innovation, and community-driven solutions.

Join a mission-driven team working to protect lives, property, and natural resources in Butte County’s wildland urban interface (WUI). As our Community Education Manager, you’ll lead dynamic outreach efforts, promote wildfire preparedness, and build meaningful connections across the county.
About the Role
The Community Education Manager supports the Director of Community Engagement and leads a wide range of public education initiatives, digital outreach efforts, and community programs. You’ll manage a small team, collaborate with partners and agencies, and serve as the public voice of BCFSC on wildfire safety and resilience.
This position is grant-funded and considered “at-will.” Continuation is dependent on available funding.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage BCFSC’s social media, digital content, and monthly newsletter
- Oversee the Community Education Coordinator and other outreach staff
- Maintain and update the BCFSC website with fresh and relevant content
- Plan and execute community events, workshops, and presentations
- Collaborate with fire-safe partners, local Firewise USA communities, and stakeholders
- Serve as a spokesperson at public meetings, media interviews, and events
- Design and distribute educational materials, press releases, and alerts
- Manage CRM data for targeted communications and outreach analytics
You’ll Thrive in This Role If You Have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Communications, Marketing, or a related field — or equivalent experience
- Experience in digital media, content creation, or community education
- Strong writing, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.)
- A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in natural resource management, wildfire mitigation, or environmental outreach
- Familiarity with event planning and volunteer engagement
- Comfort working in both indoor and outdoor environments, sometimes in inclement weather
Working Conditions
- Hybrid of office and field work, occasional evening or weekend events
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs and travel locally
- Use of office equipment, smartphones, and motor vehicles required
