About Us
The Butte County Fire Safe Council (BCFSC) is a grassroots 501c(3)nonprofit dedicated to building wildfire-resilient communities across Butte County. Since 1998, we’ve partnered with residents, agencies, and local organizations to reduce hazardous fuels, improve forest health, and strengthen wildfire resilience through education, collaboration, and action.
Our mission is to provide safety in Butte County through wildfire hazard education, mitigation, and wildfire recovery. From the foothills to the forests, our work spans defensible space projects, shaded fuel breaks, prescribed fire, post-fire restoration, youth education, and community engagement.

This position requires extensive travel within Butte County.
Job Type: Full-time
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Wage: $23.00/hr for 6 months (training), $25.00/hr (after successful completion of training).
Work Location: In person
The Field Coordinator role consists primarily of:
· Assist in implementing fuels reduction, timber removal and other fire safety projects, provides education and coordination in the field.
• Landowner outreach – phone/mail/email as needed.
• Tracking acreage in GIS Field Maps software/app
• Flag property boundaries
• Oversee Contractor work
• Document safety
• Attend public meetings & partner events
• Encourage community members to participate in volunteer efforts such as Firewise USA

Community Education Coordinator (1)

Wage: $23.00 per hour (increase to $25.00 per hour after 6-month training period)

We are seeking a motivated Community Education Coordinator to assist with public education, community engagement, and Firewise USA® program support throughout Butte County. This position plays a key role in expanding wildfire awareness, supporting local Firewise communities, managing educational materials, and helping organize community events. The ideal candidate is highly organized, enjoys public outreach, and is passionate about wildfire safety and resilience.
Key Responsibilities
Firewise USA® and Local Fire Safe Council Support
- Assist residents with the formation of new Firewise USA communities, including leading neighborhood risk assessments and supporting application submittals.
- Deliver Firewise USA presentations to neighborhood groups, clubs, and partners.
- Support existing Firewise communities with volunteer activities, special events, Action Plan updates, and annual renewals.
- Attend local Fire Safe Council meetings to provide BCFSC updates and gather community feedback.
- Maintain correspondence with community leaders and partners via Zoom, phone, email, and in-person meetings.
Media Outreach
- Assist with gathering and formatting digital media content for use across BCFSC’s social media, website, and email newsletters.
- Create and distribute educational materials (brochures, flyers, posters, videos, certificates, etc.).
- Write and edit short educational articles for newsletters, newspapers, and blog posts.
- Conduct site visits to document project success through photo and video.
Community Education and Event Support
- Assist with planning and hosting special events, including presentations, tours, volunteer days, and large community gatherings like the Paradise Grazing Festival.
- Represent BCFSC at community events, conferences, and public tabling opportunities.
- Promote BCFSC events through community calendars, bulletin boards, and partner outreach.
- Support youth education activities, including school programs, library events, and mascot appearances featuring Wildfire Ready Raccoon.
Organizational Support
- Provide customer service at the BCFSC office, assist visitors, and maintain an organized and welcoming lobby space.
- Participate in staff meetings, training opportunities, and ride-a longs with field staff as needed.
- Assist with general office tasks and event preparation.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel within Butte County. Work is based in Paradise, CA.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including community members, partners, and agency staff.
- Comfortable speaking publicly and presenting information in group settings.
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, WordPress, and social media management tools.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic digital communication tools (email, Zoom, online forms), and general digital media tools.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while also thriving as part of a collaborative team.
- Willingness to work frequent evenings or weekends for community events or outreach activities.
- Commitment to BCFSC’s mission of wildfire safety, education, and community resilience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience working in wildfire, forestry, community outreach, or environmental education.
- Education and Experience: Bachelors degree in marketing, communications, or a related field is preferred. However, candidates with equivalent professional experience in marketing, community engagement, or related fields are encouraged to apply.
- Ability to demonstrate proficiency through a portfolio, examples of past work, or a resume/CV.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in both office and outdoor environments.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Occasional exposure to hazardous weather conditions, events requiring evening or weekend hours, and outdoor field sites.
